The family history begins with grandfather Johan Gerdes, who was born in Aurich, Germany. In 1932, he opened his fish stall, called Zoutkamper Vishandel, in Ulrum. Rikus Wilhelm, Rieks’s father, joined the business in 1948, and together they ran the market stall and delivered fish to customers’ homes.
In 1975, Rieks struck out on his own and opened his own fish stall on the dike in Lauwersoog. The modest stall quickly grew into a beautiful fisherman’s hut with a small terrace. In 1986, the brick building “Restaurette Schierzicht” was constructed, and after numerous expansions and renovations, it still stands today.
In 2017, Anne Theo Gerdes joined the company, and since then it has been run by Rieks, Anne Theo, and their spouses. We, the Gerdes family, are constantly investing in the company by using fresh, local ingredients of the highest quality. Hospitality and being a good employer are our top priorities.

At Schierzicht, hospitality and accessibility are our top priorities. Almost every day of the year, we do our very best to ensure that you, our guests, have the most enjoyable experience possible in our restaurant. As a guest of Schierzicht, you also enjoy a number of privileges. For example, you can use our free Wi-Fi network, and we’re happy to recommend the must-see spots you shouldn’t miss during your visit to this unique area.
Sustainability is a top priority for us, which is why we believe it’s important to make our businesses more eco-friendly. We recently switched to an electric cooking wall: We prepare our fish, snacks, and various dishes using electricity instead of gas. In addition, we use sustainable and plastic-free packaging materials, employ eco-friendly cleaning products, save a significant amount of water with our high-tech dishwasher, and collaborate with many local partners for long-term relations.

Our restaurant is located at the intersection of three very special areas. With the Wadden Sea literally right outside our front door, we’re situated right next to a World Heritage Site! In addition, the port of Lauwersoog and Lauwersmeer National Park are two unique hotspots that attract both tourists and many locals. This makes a “trip to Lauwersoog” more than just a trip—it’s an experience for young and old alike!
